Shopify's banner covers Shopify's pixels. ConsentAlly will cover the rest.
Shopify's built-in consent banner tells Shopify's own pixels and checkout what the visitor allowed, but it does not stop tags loaded through Google Tag Manager or added to the theme by apps and code; ConsentAlly is being built to hold those tags until the visitor decides and to pass the same decision to Shopify, so one banner covers the whole storefront.
The gap
Shopify's Customer Privacy API governs the pixels registered with Shopify (web pixels and the checkout). A Google Tag Manager container added to the theme, and any script an app or a developer pasted into theme.liquid, runs regardless of what the visitor chose in Shopify's banner. Unless such a container has been set up to read Shopify's consent itself, a store that has added one has this gap.
How ConsentAlly will cover both
- The ConsentAlly script will ship as a theme app embed, so it loads ahead of theme scripts and holds the container and theme tags until the visitor decides.
- The decision will be passed to Shopify through the Customer Privacy API, so web pixels and the checkout follow the same choice as the rest of the storefront.
- ConsentAlly will detect when Shopify's own banner is still switched on and tell the store owner, so it can be switched off before visitors meet two banners.
Checkout
On the checkout, theme scripts and tag managers do not run; what runs there are Shopify's web pixels, in Shopify's sandbox. Consent for them will be enforced through the Customer Privacy API, which will receive the visitor's decision from ConsentAlly.
